Daycare Manager.net - Forum - providers general discussion - classroom management

Daycare Manager.net - Forum - providers general discussion - classroom management: "I am not a daycare provider, but I am involved in a program in which I teach dance at different daycares and preschools all over the city. This is my first week, and this morning I had a class of 13 3-4 year olds. It was completely chaotic. I had a very hard time controlling the class and keeping the children focused. Do any of you have any tips for managing a room of small children? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!"

Kids this age should not be all doing the same thing at the same time. Play the dance music and let each do his/her own thing to the music. "Let your body show how the music makes you feel." Then you, Eric, demonstrate: "The music makes me feel happy and my body moves this way". "How does it make you feel, Julia?" Look at peterhaiman.com

We need to understand the need of our children to attend daycare and as well know what they are parti9cipating in their daycre-prschool studies.
From my own understanding daycare is a nice decision for every working parents.
we can as well learn more before sending our child to any daycare center this will enhance safety.

It's a good topic. People can share opinions and advices on this matter, a matter of interest for many parents, at least.

Expectation, routine and schedule are the 3 things that should be available in every daycare setting.
Daycare should set expectation for the children in their care and the children should have a schedule to do specific routine or dance time.
If the children are in the same group regardless of their age they should learn to be doing the same activities to promote "social skill". There should be two adults handling the activity for these children; one that is giving the instruction and the other assisting the children to make sure that they are following the main teacher.
As a teacher we have to be creative and sounds interesting, we have to get their attention in order for them to be interested to what we are trying to do with them.
Also, don't forget practice, practice, and practice with them.

My son goes to preschool for three weeks now, and I feel he learns so much. I'm going to send my second child to preschool early too.

A group of children ages 3-4 are capable of doing a group activity like dance but not for long. I would suggest keeping them busy, entertained and laughing all at the same time. I would not try to do any serious moves where they have to do it exactly the right way. Show them how to do a move and let them put their own spin on it. Once you see that your losing control of the group you could switch to an activity to get them back to focusing for a few more minutes. Good luck!

Let them do the free style dance for a few minutes and shake off some energy and then try and teach them some basic moves. Their attention spans are not real long.

I think they really fall on routine. You have to mention about the routine and make them go through it very timely. Also stern instructions and punishments on repeated misbehavior is what help them learn when they go wrong.

I feel your entrance play a big part to it. If you want them to pay attention, then catch their attention right from the start. Otherwise, they would just be disinterested.
